What is spam? Unsolicited emails (otherwise known as SPAM) are a major headache for everyone on the Internet these days. While we try to stop as much as we can, it is impossible to stop the majority without blocking genuine emails from the same source. For example, anyone can open a free email account at an ISP (e.g. Yahoo) and then send off millions of emails before being detected and removed. If we blocked all emails from Yahoo we would then block valid emails as well. We have tried many Anti-spam systems but all will block some valid emails as well. Despite the appearances on the SPAM email, Acenet Internet Services respects the privacy of it's customers and does not give out your email address to anyone. One of the most common ways of becoming spammed is by placing your email address on a webpage where there is a box that states 'I agree to receive further information from 'this company' and it's affiliates'. By agreeing to this you are essentially authorising the company to sell your email address. Once your email address is on one spammers list it seems to get on other lists quite quickly. It also annoys us as it floods our mail servers with unwanted mail. We wish there was a simple solution. Currently the fastest solution is to change your email address to another address at Acenet. This will stop the spam for as long as you are careful with the disclosure of your address. Alternatively Acenet's Mailscan service now includes a stronger SPAM Filter. This service reads the contents of each email looking for key words and phrases. If a sufficient number of matches are found the email is rejected. If accepted this email is sent on to the Virus Scanning Servers. For more information on Mailscan Click Here. |
